•Pipeline rate limited by slowest pipeline stage
•Multiple tasks operating simultaneously
•Potential speedup = Number pipe stages
•Unbalanced lengths of pipe stages reduces speedup
•Time to “fill” pipeline and time to “drain” it reduces speedup
